Autopista del Sol to/from Orotina/near the Airport

Hotel Vista Pacifico is 1 hour & 15 minutes from Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela near San Jose the capital.

Directions for driving from Airport to Hotel Vista Pacifico in Jaco

When you exit Arrivals at Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO) you turn right. This is the airport access road and it is one way. Keep right at the fork and merge onto the Hwy #1. If you are coming from one of the car rental companies just keep on Hwy #1, past the airport.

You will pass by a Dos Pinos Milk Factory on your left after approximately 6-7 km and you should get into the right lane when you pass Dos Pinos. Take the next exit (you will go under an overpass and exit on your right). There is a small traffic circle and you will be crossing over the bridge and back over Hwy #1. You are now on Radial El Coyal and will follow it to a round about (approx. 4km). Take the ramp to Hwy #27 – Autopista Del Sol. There is a toll both on the entry ramp. You will merge onto Hwy #27 going west and continue along for approximately 37 km. through 2 more toll booths (one at Atenas and a second toll both just before the Jaco turn off). Directly after this second toll booth you should get over to the right lane and take the exit for Jaco – Hwy #34 on your right. You will pass under Hwy #27 and continue on Hwy #34 (also known as the Costenera).

You will pass Plaza Herradura on your right after traveling approx 30 km. Continue another 3.5 km and directly after Yum Yum gas station make a right onto the next road, el Boulevard.

Vista Pacifico’s entrance is 500 m. along el Boulevard. There are signs for Vista Pacifico and Casa Ponte at the entrance. It is the first main entrance on the right. You will now be on a gravel road. Keep right up the hill and take the second turn to the left and travel to the very top of the hill. You are there!!!which brings you to Jaco

See below right for instructions From Orotina and When you reach Jaco.

Map from SJO

Old Route to Orotina - 3 hours

Be sure to request a road map of Costa Rica from your car rental agency. Road signage is poor so look for and follow the signs for “Los Sueños Resort” or “Punta Leona”.

Airport Directions

From the Airport (SJO): Exit the airport and head NORTH in the direction of San Ramon, Jaco, Quepos, etc.

Around the Airport follow signs for San Ramon (but don’t go all the way to the town). You will continue on the Main Highway (Route #1) ten to fifteen minutes. After the second time the two lanes of traffic merges into one lane (each time at a bridge), get in the right lane and take the very next exit for Jaco and Quepos / Manuel Antonio. There is also a sign here for “Punta Leona” & “Los Suenos Resort” and the town of Atenas (14km). At the off ramp from the Main Highway (Route #1) turn left at the stop sign (there is a sign here for Parque Nacional Carara).

You will be crossing back over Route 1. Reset your trip odometer here to follow our detailed directions. The road from here on is relatively good, but very curvy and steep in some of the mountain passes. Passing should be done with extreme caution, though there are several long straight sections. If there are no lines on the road, assume it is not safe to pass. The road begins to slowly descend and then the descent becomes much greater as you drive into a deep valley and cross a single lane bridge. This 1st bridge goes over Río Grande. (It is one of the first and oldest bridges in Costa Rica) Next up is the town of Atenas — a small town with a gas station and other amenities. You continue straight through Athenes and enter the mountains, Follow the road without making another turn until you reach San Mateo. Here there is a well-marked left turn as you go around the central park (follow signs for “Punta Leona” and “Los Suenos Resort”).

From Orotina

Go straight through the next town of Orotina. This is a good place to stop for fruits and snacks if you have taken the old road. There are several markets on the left near the railroad tracks and a gas station with clean restrooms. After crossing the railroad tracks, take the next exit to the right to Route 27, the sign says Jaco, Quepos, Caldera. Follow this road and just past the Toll Booth you will see the exit to Route 34, with signs for Jaco / Quepos. After this exit there is a sign a little way up the road for Jacó so you know you are going the correct way.

From the new highway, Autopista del Sol, having exited at Tarcoles/Caldera you will find yourself on the road to Jaco.

Next, you will cross over the Tárcoles River Bridge - Crocodiles! Park either before or after bridge along the road and get out and walk over to the edge of the bridge in order to get a great view of many enormous crocodiles. (We are talking 5 meter long crocs here!) Carara National Park is 5 more minutes up the road on the left. The first view of the ocean is at km #60 after exiting from Hwy 1. There is a gas station here, too. Pass “Punta Leona” and the exit for “Los Suenos” (with Plaza Herradura (with a lighthouse built in the mall) and a flashing light at the intersection. Jacó is only 10 more minutes away.

Don't Speed
The country doesn't have an army so they have more police.
The fines are very high if you get nicked.

Jaco MapWhen you reach JACÓ
(pronounced HacO)

Hotel Vista Pacifico is at the north end of town at the first entrance to Jaco when you come from San José. (We are South of Herradura / Plaza Herradura and the turn for Los Suenos by about 4 km)

On Hwy #34 South (The Costanera) take the first entrance to Jaco after the JACO Gas Station (right toward the ocean) (there is an old Restaurant at the corner where you turn right) into the town. This road is a boulevard with trees down the middle of 4 lanes and has signage for "Casa Ponte" which is just below us on the hill.

Turn right at the first right-hand turn arrow painted on the road (about 1/2 km from the corner). There is a beige coloured wall on either side of our entrance road, where you will see our sign. Proceed through the gate and take the second left. AparHotel Vista Pacifico is the Yellow coloured buildings with towers at the top of the hill. In the day light you can see the buildings clearly from the Boulevard. If you check the website you will know exactly what to look for as we have a current picture on the site. http://www.vistapacifico.com/
